Wireless Mouse messed up my laptop!

I plugged in the USB part of my wireless MS mouse (which i have been using and ahs worked perfectly for the past few years) and for some reason it went searching for drivers which ended up not being able to download. Now for the past few hours, every 5 seconds, my laptop makes the sound you hear when you plug and unplug a USB drive into the computer and a message pops up saying: "USB Device not recognized". It is unplugged and I tried restarting my laptop and even did a system restore and still no luck

Please help!

Clarification request: USB ports

Have you tried plugging in another device to the same USB port to see if it recognizes that device?

I know that I never install the mouse software. The drivers are native to the OS and will be fine without drivers.

The fact it went to the internet is a concern since not one mouse in over a decade has done that. Something's wrong here but let's say this happened to me,.

1. Shutdown.
2. Unplug all other USB things.
3. Remove AC.
4. Remove the battery.
5. Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds. Release.
6. Slip in battery, apply AC and re-test. DO NOT PLUG IN ANY USB THING.

Depending on the result I would call it fixed or move to the next step.

If it fails I boot SAFE MODE and remove all the MICE I found in the device manager.
When done, another reboot and test.

Good luck and it's a shame the make and model was not found for the laptop. Some HP models "have issues."
