Low virtual memory & svchost.exe simultaneously freezing pc
by chiphxla - 4/5/12 8:12 AM
About 2 weeks ago I started experiencing serious slowdown to the point of freeze. A quick check determined svchost.exe was running at around 450k kb from the normal 30-40k kb and I also got the Windows "low virtual memory" message. I ran Process Explorer but all the programs running seemed legit. I went into System to check out the paging, tried experimenting with changing to system controlled, and when that didn't work tried upping the paging. I'm still getting LVM messages, and yesterday after rebooting the svchost.exe skyrocketed to around 7-800k and CPU up to 100%. This went on for over an hour before I could use the pc. I'm running XP with the latest service packs, Norton. One more note from yesterday: the browser seems to occasionally hijack to a commercial page. Not consistently, but occasionally. Thanks in advance!
