Mac pro and airport

I have purchased an iPad and wish to connect wirelessly to my Quad Intel Mac Pro. It says it has:
Software Versions:
Menu Extra: 6.2.2 (622.2)
configd plug-in: 6.2.5 (625.6)
System Profiler: 6.0.1 (601.1)
Network Preference: 6.2.2 (622.2)
AirPort Utility: 5.5.3 (553.20)
|0802 11 Family: 3.2 (320.1)
I take the above to indicate that my computer does have an airport facility but somehow I cannot find any way of accessing it - can anyone help me please
PS I have no trouble connecting the two via a USB cable but that is not satisfactory long term. TIA

I usually do this with my WiFi network and not directly to any Apple or PC. That is, I share whatever with my Apple/PC and then with the pad, connect over the WiFi LAN to the Apple/PC.

Thanks for your help - It was not the actual answer but you made me think about my whole system hookup and using your pointers I was able to see the error of my ways - thanks again
