Why does my computer see the D Drive?

I backed up my laptop computer using a thumb drive. It ran out of space before I finished the back up. Now my computer keeps telling me that Local Disk D: is running out of disk space. Disk D is the thumb drive. How do I convince my computer that the drive is no longer there? When I go to My Computer it shows as a drive and when I click on it it shows a backup and a system restore icon. The thumb drive was used in a usb port. I have windows xp pro as my os. I have plenty of room left on my c drive.

did it install some software on your main drive? If so, it's probably related to that. I've never had reason to allow USB flash or hard drives to install their backup software. In any event, consider that explanation as a possible cause for what you see.

Deleted backup file

I deleted the backup file showing on the local D: disk showing in My computer. I will see if it works. If not I will see if the drive did indeed install some kind of software.

What back-up pgm.?

Whatever back-up process you used is showing it's status as being "not done". It wants to finish the task, so unless you close it or disengage its process, it will report the unfinished back-up. If you have a DVD drive, allow that to be shown as ready. Next time you do a back-up use it instead. -OR- use an ext. DVD drive for such purposes in you have none present on your laptop. Either that or a much larger flash drive. Plus, I strongly urger you to refrain from using a flash drive as a back-up they tend to have issues and any back-up would be part of "multiple back-up" process as in more than 1 back-up of the same data to be safe.

I will do as you say about the backups. I went to My Computer, clicked on the D Drive, clicked on the backup icon and deleted it. I no longer am getting the message about the drive. Wheeeeee.
