everything has vanished

Firstly bear with me as i am not very good at explaining things...Here goes my pc has been affected maybe by a virus and i when i click on the start menu everything has vanished (all programs, my documents, 1000's of photos, also the run and search functions etc etc), my desktop icons have vanished as well but my wife after trying for hours has managed to get firefox and incredimail working so at least i have internet and email. I have avg 8.0 full version on my pc and have run that a few times and got rid of a few things but nothing major, i have tried to run malwarebytes but when i tell it to scan the whole pc the malware box just vanishes as well. I know all the things missing are almost certainly still on my pc but are getting shielded by something !!!!...Any help would be appreciated

ps just to add when i try to go on task manager it says it has been disabled by the administrator and also i cannot use system restore as it says there are no dates to restore it to !!

Thanks bob for the info , this is the exact problem i have but i have got a major problem as my run and search option has disappeared, any ideas how to get round this problem.....thanks again Colin

And the instructions for the removal followed, the answer to the question is in the #2 step. Quote from that page "It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested in this guide on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive."
Good luck on this venture. Not all pests can be completely removed unless the steps are followed exactly.

And read what they wrote. I had someone last week at the office read a link and they came back that it told them nothing. We had them show us what they meant and they spoke out "h.t.t.p...."

They did not get a cookie that day.
