help! my 18 year old droped his dell laptop

Hi all here's the problem my son droped his dell laptop and now it won't boot its missing the bootloader,I have tried everything system restore not working its not even seeing an operating system,tried ctrl +F12 nothing same for F2&F12.I connected the drive to my system so we could format it but windows will not complete the format,we don't care about getting anything from the drive,we just need a way to format it! any help from anyone please!!!!

Keep in mind, that with drop damage, all bets are off as to what may be damaged. If you're lucky it was only the HDD, but the force of the impact would have translated through every component, so it's entirely possible more than just the HDD was damaged. I would not be at all surprised if a month or two from now the display started developing issues.

Your son will want to treat that laptop with kid gloves from now on to try and reduce the chances of triggering any additional issues.

Well the 320 gig drive is fried and as for the laptop its fried as well thanks to all of you for the help,guess thats what happens when one is well clumsy lol thanks again everyone.

What size was the old HDD?

While some may question the wisdom of getting a drive, here the small drives can be so cheap that it's worth the gamble.

30 bucks plus shipping finds 160GB SATA laptop drives such as http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ST9160310AS-R&cat=HDD

It's worth the gamble and if not, you add some USB case and create some portable drive.

It appears you have a bad HD. It dropped, the results of a bad HD is that it won't respond or finalize itself. Basically, use the HD makers own s/w tools to help diagnose any issue. Visit the HD support website to get those diags. If it fails then, you pretty much know it can't be re-used, even with 1 error. I suggest as already stated to you if the tests fail, get another new HD. If you have warranty, use it.
