Twitter, facebook... vs Privacy

How much info do you have to provide to these "social networks" in order to read what others are saying? Sometimes I just want to follow a particular issue or site but do not want to get "involved". I realize how much is out there, on the net, but want to keep as much as possible off the net.

Just last month my son's phone linked his accounts on facebook to his phone without much warning. Ouch.
