1. Heat. Do your yearly air blast on the vents with canned air and hope it dislodges a hairball.

2. Boot SAFE MODE and see if the power profile is set to something odd like shutdown at 99% battery reserve.

It sounds like it's overheating. Try the suggestion with canned air. If that doesn't work and you're brave and can keep track of a lot of screws, take off the back of the laptop and see if there's some hair or bits of carpet fluff or fur stuck in the fan. You can also test out the if it's overheating or not with the software Speedfan. You can also buy a cooling pad. Buy the kind that plugs into the wall and not the usb port. The latter can put more strain on the computer. If all else fails, take your laptop to the computer repair shop and get to them to put in a new fan for you.

surface. If you put it on your lap, a blanket, a pillow or other soft surface, the intake and exhaust vents can become blocked and cause the system to overheat and shutdown.

Its real simple to clear out the cooling fans on this model of laptop. This quick video on youtube shows you how to do it.
