Hello. I just installed AVG free version 10. Did a rootkit check and have 272--all "white-listed" or "hidden" so not removed. What does this mean? ANy rememdy? I have windows XP home SP3. Thanks kindly.

AVG writes "Please note that rootkits can be either correct or malicious. Correct rootkits may be installed as a part of legitimate application. The list of some well-known rootkits can be found in the FAQ 2346. Because of that it is necessary to pay close attention to the Anti-Rootkit results."

Since it's on the whitelist and AVG documents why this is so, no further action is required.

Thanks. Others have told me to be more suspicious of any in c windows/system 32 folder and subfolders; I do have alot there, in addition to the whitelist. It is has been suggested I go to: http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis to remove. Your thoughts on this? Thanks again for all your help.

I recall folk that dive in and start removing all that they find without research or worse, without a backup.

They don't have a plan to recover their files or system once they deleted what a rootkit revealer found and it turned out to be there for a good reason. Not all rootkits are evil.
