My Hard Drive Keeps Filling Up

I have a Sony Laptop with a 10GB hard drive running Win XP Pro and the hard dtive keeps filling up.

I regularly delete all the temp files, log files etc. and run Reg Cleaner (4.3 by Jouni Vuorio) but mysteriously my hard drive fills up to the point of not being able to defrag.

My Local Disk Properties shows 9.2 GB out of the 10GB being used. However when I look at the detail

Windows = 1.85 GB
Documents & Settings = 2.15GB
Programs = 1.4 GB

This is considerably less than 9.2GB.

Where might the other be? How do I prevent my hard drive from mysteriously filling up?

Let's start with the basics. When was the last time you visited the Windows Update site to install any patches? Do you at least have SP2 installed?

You haven't told us what other software you might be running.

Some utility suites for instance have an "undeleter" program that keeps track of deleted files including those deleted from the "Recycle bin". Although they are marked as deleted they are still consuming storage space on the HD. Matter of fact those files in the "Recycle bin" are also taking up storage space as are files in your Temp directory and the Temporary Internet Files.

Use your Browser's options to adjust the aallowable size of the Temp Internet files and to delete them when you close the browser.

wrong reporting of free space...

I run scandisk to check this, including surface scan. I often get "free space is being reported wrong".
And yes, sys restore can take up a lot of space.
Are u virus and spy free? Then the gurus can tell you how to turn off sys res, reboot, which cuts it back, turn it back on, reboot to rebuild it.

How much memory do you have?

Windows has a bad habit of reserving space
on the H/D for virtual memory.
