My internal webcam isn't working =(

So I have a Dell Studio (service tag: 8P2SLH1) it's about 2 years old. I had to reformat the hard drive a couple months ago because I got a bad virus. I re-installed all my drivers and whatnot using the CDs that came with my laptop and everything seemed fine. However, my webcam would not turn on during start up like it used to do. I tried installing the drivers for it using the CD and Dell Drivers website, but the webcam still won't work. My computer doesn't even recognize any kind of webcam driver or unknown driver when I open up the Device Manager. I'm pretty sure the webcam itself is not broken. What can I do to fix this? I am no longer insured under Dell so I can't use their online tech help.

Why do you think the webcam is OK?

Since it does not show up you must have some other test?

For example I've used a LIVE CD called UBUNTU that helps me see if a device is there or gone.

Because it was working fine before I reformatted the computer and there's no reason why the camera itself should be broken.

Order of install matters.

It's a shame Dell didn't tell us that.

In short I find I need to install motherboard drivers first then the MSUAA for some machines (Dell must tell) and then I can install audio, video, lan, wifi, web cam and so on. Dell's quickset in most Dells is not optional.

Apparently I'm missing a couple files so I'm reinstalling them now. Keeping my fingers crossed when I reach the webcam driver.

It keeps saying there's an error

Everytime I try to install the Internal Webcam driver it says there's an error when the driver's trying to set up at 90%

Anything installed like an antivirus or "Teatimer"/ spybot?

Sometimes folk run into this if they install the AV too soon.

The error message in "quotes" may or may not help. Be sure to hit dell.com and use their chat support if you can at http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/chat/hardware_chat?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

the forums there arent really helping. it seems that some people have similar problems but so far theres no working solution. i might just bring my laptop to my college to get it fixed if i cant fix it.

This sounds like another web cam failure. I've seen folk spend lots of money trying to "save" the web cam. If the OS reinstall fails and no other driver finds it why not get a cheap web cam?

i was just saying itd be nice to have a computer that still works like it did when i bought it. oh well thanks for the advice though! i was at least able to update other drivers
