Hijacked? Someone eles controlling my e-mail!

Apox 2 months ago my address book/contact list for my e-mails disappeared. So I just rebuilt it off old e-mails and went on my merry way. In my inquires on line I've heard this is happening to others & nothing to worry about.Then I started to get e-mails returned/rejected from old addresses no longer in use. And e-mails from friends asking why I'm sending out spam with links to mostly drug/medical rip-offs. I convinced them that I was not "pushing" viagra. Although these e-mails do appear to be coming from me. After the fourth time we are all losing our sense of humor. Today all of my hotmail has disappeared. Now I'm really worried. I've run all the virus, adware, malware scans I can find. I'm on a HP dv6633 using IE/MSN Explorer, Windows 6 sp 1, Mcafee, Microsoft Security Essentials, Advanced System Care & Avast. Any clue? Please help.

Today I'm getting reports of a wide spread email failure. It might not be you.

And might be the companies cleaning up the intrusions.

And your sense of humor has returned, you might want to consider the following:

I see where you noted 'I'm on a HP dv6633 using IE/MSN Explorer, Windows 6 sp 1, Mcafee, Microsoft Security Essentials, Advanced System Care & Avast'. If I'm reading, understanding and counting correctly, it looks as though you have 3 A/V's installed. Do you?

If they are all installed and running on one system, you would benefit from uninstalling 2 of them. Having more than one, is known to cause conflicts and (unwanted) issues.

Great suggestion! I removed McAfee, Microsoft Security Essentials & Avast. Replaced them with AVG Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes & Zone Alarm do you think they can all get along together? When I scanned with them all that was found was cookies. I thought those were pretty harmless. I'm still not getting any new Hotmail but tons of Junk. Very concerned somone eles has access to my e-mail. Any other suggestions??

Malware is not necessary Spyware and Junkmail is Spammail.

I am using Trend Micro's Internet Security Pro.

It covers everything that goes through the Firewall. And, stops it dead in its tracks.

I also, use my I.S.P.'s thorough e-mail control features that has to go through the very tight security of the I.S.P's Servers. Will not mention it's name for more security's purposes.

My advice, drop that overly used MS-Mail's a.k.a Hotmail free service and, get on your official I.S.P.'s web-site's free E-mail service.

Note: Freeware for Internet protection = Hackers' Heaven.

As long as you don't have ZoneAlarm's Internet Security installed, which includes an A/V, I think you should be fine. As a matter of fact, compared to what you had installed before, I would think your system is now running at .. "lightening speed"! devil

I don't know how you went about uninstalling your McAfee product, but if you didn't use the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe), you may find it will remove bits and pieces McAfee tends to leave behind.

Some of the information may be redundant, but it should give you an idea of what happened and why (other possibilities). Also, what you need to do to prevent it in the future.
