Sony Vaio Freezing Problems

I've had my sony vgn-fe690p for years and have never had a problem minus the camera connecting and disconnecting depending on how the screen is angled. A few weeks ago the computer would randomly freeze. Thinking it was a driver problem I did a complete restore back to my original factory settings. However, the problem still persisted even before windows was loading. There is no specific point at which it freezes. Even though the screen freezes, if I'm in the process of saving files to a flash or a running a CD, the computer will continue to save or run the CD even though the screen is frozen. I finally gave up and took it to a local shop. Apparantly, he tried replacing the hardrive and other components and finally decided the motherboard was bad. My question is is it possible for the motherboard to be bad even though the computer will continue saving or running a CD? He wants $500 for it but for that price I might as well get a new laptop for that.
