sound driver issues for gateway mx6440 laptop

I recently used combofix and lost my sound. It says that the multimedia audio controller is not installed. I can't seem to find the correct driver. Apparantly it takes more than one step. Can anyone help?

...Two separate drivers need to be installed for such sound.. First, see if there is an "Audio BUS" driver available at the computer manufacturer's website to go along with the standard audio driver. Uninstall any current audio drivers installed, then install the BUS driver first, then install the standard audio driver.

still no sound

Gateway told me to download realtek but that didn't help either. I tried driverwhiz.com and it said I have no driver installed but wants 29.99 to continue. Is there a free sight to fix driver problems? I don't want to pay and find out that they can't help either. I can't believe that gateway will charge to help me with a their driver that won't download. Best Buy geek squad said it's confusing to download their drivers and their charge starts at $60.00. How can it be that difficult?

Use windows 7 32 bit OS install - not 64

I got windows 7 to load fine - just DON'T use 64 bit Windows 7, use 32 bit. If you use the 32 bit, almost everything loads right out of the box/install. What you need are a few drivers that you can get at http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/mydl.asp?OS=Windows%20Vista%20(32-bit)

I spent hours trying to find all the 64 bit drivers, but could never get the audio one to work on 64 bit Windows 7.

I can't offer more than for XP you find the Audio Bus or MSUAA if you don't get that installed first then the sound card doesn't work even if you find the right driver.

Here's the real problem -> Let's say you took your car into a shop to be fixed but blindfolded the mechanic as well as would not tell him the make, model of the car. Your car would never be fixed!
