Diagnostic help - Is there anything else to test?

My computer averatec 4265-EH1
was freezing doing the most basic stuff. I decided it was probably the hard drive. Bought a new one. Same problem. I also started shutting down and saying that it cannot find the Hd. Then it will show up again. I already ran scans on both Hard Drives, the memory, CPU, checked the CMOS battery, and the power source. Its an old computer if its the motherboard its not worth fixing. Is there anything else to check. I don't want to pay someone to look at it if I can be 90% sure its the motherboard. Thanks

No OS info, no explanation of when it would freeze. Not much we can do.

At five years. This laptop may need the deep service.

Noted at http://forums.cnet.com/5208-19681_102-0.html?messageID=3196452&tag=forums06;posts#3196452 this FIVE or more year old laptop is likely like all the others I encounter. After I get the OK I'll tear it down, pull all the heatsinks, clean it, clean off the old heatsink compound, install fresh compound and build it back up. Usually you find the laptop has never had any of the yearly cleanings.

I am running Vista. I have done fresh install on both the old and new Hard Drive. I have periodically taken the cover off and blown out the dust. It is pretty clean inside considering age. It begins freezing right on start up doing simple things like opening a folder from the desktop.

You may want to do the next level of service with the removal of the heatsinks, the old heatsink compound and fresh heatsink compound.
