This machine has seen better days. After this many years you sometimes need to call it and start shopping. Many won't replace the old motherboard and CPU so there is little more you can do for this old iron.

Boot it from bios or windows setup. If it reboots again, then overheating and so most probably fan. If it doesnt, either drivers or windows.
Try to boot it from bios or windows setup and then post again with results.
Tried that.

The results are such that you know to avoid touching any old Socket A machine because the owners will task you with every failure from now on even if it was a pre-existing condition. If you value your time and reputation you know to not accept these into service.

I understand your concern Bob about this problem but we are trying to find source of the problem. If after finding it, then it is not economically viable to solve it and it would be better to buy a new one, then it is for the user to decide.
For now, I will wait for a reply from him so as to try and pinpoint the problem and then it is in his hands.
I know the source of the problem.

And hoped to help others avoid losing their time and reputation (even their sanity) over the old socket A machines. I know the cause, what fixes a few and why you must avoid this model in your service shop.
The hardest part is how to deal with a customer that insists that the board be fixed. Yes we can do that but when the cost to repair exceeds replacement, why would that be a good thing?

Personally I put my money on a damaged hardware but there is a tiny possibility that it is the OS.

Then a fresh install and you move on. But and this is the problem. We know this model all too well.
Yes, we can disable the L1, L2 CPU cache and get the system to run albeit slowly but what good is that? Yes, we saved the machine?

You are right but still he is trying to find a solution without a fresh install or new hardware.
I repair computers too and most probably I would do exactly as you say but if I had some information on that computer that I would like to save or I could not afford to buy a new computer or to pay a tech to format my computer? That is for him to learn how to do things. The new hardware and/or fresh install are the sure problem solvers but in reality you just went around the problem not solved it.
Even though we are 99.99% certain that the motherboard is the problem, there is a very tiny possibility that it is not and if i was the one that was going to fork out the cash for either of the above solutions, sure as hell I would try the other options first.

Then you have it here. Disable the L1 and L2 CPU cache which slows everything down to where it may run. Remember we are not interested in any other goal than a machine that RUNS.
Since we can't replace motherboard capacitors (time, money!) or the motherboard, CPU (money!) we are left with the usual tweak to drag it back into operation.
Again, the model is well known, the usuals are well known. What is unknown is how long it takes the new technicians and shop owners to learn what machines to never take into the shop.
