i don't have that kind of router.. and it's only on one computer, not all connecting to the network.

on both firefox and IE every time i use google or any other search engine, the links send me to a random site advertising spam type things. i've run avg, malwarebytes, and ad aware. none of them have done anything. i've tried system restore and all of that stuff. i have windows xp home edition.

before i do anything, i noticed a pattern. when i use the search box at the top of the firefox page, the links go all crazy. but when i go to the actual google page, it works fine. so maybe there's something wrong with just the search box?

When you post your hijackthis log file to a HJT forum it should be interesting to see if they spot it.
If they don't it begins to look like a rootkit.

As to what a rootkit is, save the hard questions for forums. Do your own research with google for questions like this.

Asking google What is a rootkit? results is the same answers you would get here and saves us from covering common knowledge items when we should be focusing on getting your hijackthis log read.
I know a few won't understand why it is best for us to do a little work or research on our own but in case you don't understand it is this simple. There are only so many answers in a day. Spend them wisely.
If you fritter away or waste time on a question that has a ready answer you can obtain yourself you show disrespect to those that help you.
