Computer playing what sounds like commercials

I don't know how to really say this but recently I've been having some computer problems. I'm running Windows XP. Every so often my computer will freeze and lock up while online. I need to manually shut down to get the computer to do anything. Also almost like clock work, I will have what sounds like commercials playing without warning online and off (the sound without the pictures). I have tried to do a system restore to a time when the computer was working fine but now system restore will not do anything. What can I do to get my computer back to normal? I haven't downloaded anything dangerous but I am not the only person using the computer. All my scans have shown no infections. I don't want to reformat my drives, is there something else I can do?

What scans? A lot of people are under the mistaken impression that they only need to scan with a single virus scanner tool, and that will catch everything.

Ok, I've scanned with Avira, Ad-Ware, Trend Micro, and Advanced System Care, plus others I can't recall. They do nothing, finding no spyware/malware or any problems. The problem is this: I will leave my computer on, running nothing and I will hear what appears to be commercials. I don't have any cable or over the air TV programs set up on the computer. I can't for the life of me figure out where the sounds are coming from. Is there something that will give me some idea of what is going on. I've also tried to do a system restore to a time when I didn't have the problem and it will not work either. Please help.
