Windows XP locks up on my laptop

by RedShadow120 - 2/6/10 7:35 PM

Recently my computer started to lockup after 5-15 minutes of use, forcing me to hard reset. In this state the mouse is mobile, and occasionally can highlight/ click icons, but does not respond to them. Open windows cannot be manipulated, attempting to minimize or close causes all three min/restore/close buttons to disappear. ctrl+alt+del will occasionally cause its icon to appear in the lower right corner, but the task manager itself does not appear/cannot be accessed. So far i've attempted system restore to before the problem began to occur, clearing out hard drive space, defragmenting the hard drive, and running Spybot S&D. None of these have helped, and when I attempted to restore to an even earlier date, all of the restore data had disappered.

The lockup tends to occur shortly after I attempt to do something; browse to a new webpage, starting defrag, accessing control panel, but not routinely at the exact same point. Sometimes I'll be able to browse through several pages before locking up, other times it will cease functioning before I can run anything. Most of my attempted fixes have had to be run from safe mode, where the error does not occur at all. I've also ruled out overheating. I've monitored temperatures and it has locked up at relatively low temps as well as continued to function at high temperatures. Thanks in advance for your help.
