Direct X persistance

I'm running Windows ME, and I'm to install the newest version of DirectX (which is 9.0c). During the install it will get up to "copying files" and then an error, "Direct X did not copy a required file. Installation failed." And so I am stuck. The game requires at least 9.0, and any version of such is giving me the same exact problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

(I'm using the Directx version from Microsoft.com, on the official DirectX site. The game, oddly, didn't come with DirectX.)

.....Downloading the full DirectX 9.0c "Redistributable" from the link below. The file is quite a bit larger, (about 34 MB) but once the file is downloaded to your computer, you can disconnect from the internet and install DirectX offline. If you've got a broadband connection it's worth the extra time to download the full installer. The file is a self-extracting executable which you can extract the files to a new folder and you can run the DirectX setup from there.:

DirectX 9.0c Redistributable for Software Developers - Multilingual

One thing to beware of...Some older cards don't support the newer DirectX 9 very well.

I just tried installing that version and, unfortunately, cutting my cable connection off didnt seem to make a difference. Same problem :\. Any other ideas?

Atomic. You did uninstall the former attempt before trying to reinstall. Didn't you? Otherwise, you're probably just compounding the problem. For what it's worth. chuck

It's changed to something else which I tracked down with Google...

Remember that some old video drivers will not "take" DX9C and you'll need to mix/match what fits.

I'd love to help, but as I read your post... you leave out important details that I and others hinted are needed. Also, software such as Windoctor or other annoyances will interfere. You get to find out which since you haven't shared.

Okay, sorry about that. The computer I'm working with isn't very well maintained, but I've done my best to keep spyware and such off of it. There are no programs running in the background when I install it, other than that an my operating system (Im on Windows ME) what information can I supply you with for you to help me? Thanks.

Also, if its a game, note the game, what game patches are being used and what issue you are having.

okay...

Windows ME, with a geforce 2, 40 GB hard drive, and 128 ram. Not much. I'm trying to install Everquest (ha). The game will install fine, but wont launch at all, it gives me an error that I need to new DirectX. The game has worked in the past, but the computers just being difficult right now, heh.
