Toshiba laptop internet problems! Please help!

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop w Windows Vista that had no problems until a few weeks ago. Now, I can get on the internet thru Internet Explorer and get to most web pages BUT I cannot access my aol mail or anything else with aol like computer checkup or downloads; I cannot access my bank account; I cannot download Firefox; etc. I think maybe my problems started when I disabled the Verizon Access Manager. Use to have this for Internet but it did not work where I now live and cancelled it over a year ago, but since then still had to go thru VZ Access Manager to get on internet. Decided I did not need to do that anymore, so I went straight through Linksys instead. I have Wildblue satellite internet service. I called them but they said to call Verizon. I have tried to uninstall this VZ Access Manager program, but it will not let me! Gives me a message that log file not found each time I try.
I called Verizon and they were unable to come up with why it won't uninstall.
Now, everything is screwed up and I cannot access so many things on the internet! I called Linksys and spent hours and hours with them. They were not able to get on the computer remotely even though we tried and tried. They are the ones that suggested downloading Firefox but when that window comes up, the box for download does not show even though when I pulled up the same window on my desktop, it shows the download box.
I have tried to reinstall Internet Explorer but it says my computer is not compatible with IE 8 but that is what I have on it!
I have tried to reset IE settings back to default but that does not help either.
I also get a message when I open Internet Explorer that says: cannot find file ///C:program%20files/aol%20 toolbar/welcome.html" but I have HAD this problem for awhile and I just hit ok twice each time it comes up and I get onto Internet Explorer and had no problems accessing everything before.
Can anyone please help me?
