disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter

Ok, I have an older Desktop I'm repairing. I'm installing Win2k3 server on it. The HD is detected in the BIOS, the only thing is that there is a good bit of time before I get the "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter" msg.

I can boot off the CD, run win2k3 setup, HD is detected, formatted, all the necessary files are copied...when it is restarted and getting ready to run setup, I get the "disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter" msg. Any suggestions?

Only A Couple Possibilities..,

1. You may have left a floppy, CD, or USB device in the drivej. If that's the case, remove all such devices and see if the message continues.

2. You have a faulty ribbon cable between the motherboard and hard drive which is allowing the install but is dodgy upon final startup.

3. And this is the most common... The hard drive works well enough to format and begine the install of the OS, but has too many bad sectors to function as designed.. Our solution here is to replace the hard drive and start from scratch.

Well, I removed the CD after formatting/copying files, and it did the same thing. I also replaced the cable and the same thing happened. Prior to even using the HD I scanned the whole drive in Spinrite to make sure there were no bad sectors. I can hook up the drive to an IDE to USB adapter and copy files to it, so...I don't know, I'm guessing something might be wrong with the motherboard or something, I have no idea...I will try using a different cable again and using a different hard drive.
