Bad Image error message.

for no apparent reason, my pc will not fully boot all startup programs.
I have only adAware, AVG, messenger, and my network connection starting at boot up.
It tries to boot messenger and the error message comes up:
Windows\winSxS\x86_microsoft.windows.GdiPlus_6595b64144ccf1df_1.0.2600.5581_x_ww_dfbc4fc4\gdiplus.dll is not a valid windows image.
Then all boot operations cease.

WhenI tried to open Device Manager this message came up: mmc.exe-bad image. Avira also gets a long involved message similar to the messenger one and will not boot.

I hope someone can help with this as my system is dead in the water.

I have run registry scans, virus scans, and malware scans, finding nothing.
I am running XP home with all the latest service packs and updates.

Restart and press F8 before Windows loads and select "Last known good". If that doesn't work, you can try system restore and select a date prior to when the error began. If still no good, a repair installation could bail you out.

I will try the last known...hve tried sys restore back about a month to no avail.
