Computer help forum: sluggish computer

sluggish computer

I was wondering if anybody can help me. I have an IBM NetVista
model # 6794M3U, 512MB ram, 40GB hard drive, cable modem. For the past couple of weeks, ( almost a month ) it takes alot of time to open up programs; when you double click on a desktop shortcut, going to the internet, etc., it takes anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds to get where you want to go. I've tried defragging, registry compressing, etc. through System Mechanic Professional and nothing seems to help. Does anyone have any suggestions that might help? Thank you in advance for your time and help.

Go to start, run, msconfig, see what you have running at startup.

have u tried a virus..and malware scan?.. and it could be the hardrive is no longer at its best performance.?

Why would you do that?

Why would you do that? Then you'd be more prone to trading a slow computer for a non-working one. Doesn't seem very equitable to me.

Another way of investigating this would be to look at the running tasks in taskmgr, you can see the amount of memory each application is using and more.
