Reformat or use recovery disc?

I'm having a problem with my Compaq Presario v3000 laptop. 3 months ago, my laptop's screen started getting red pixels on it and so it is just now, 3 months later that i had the money to have it fixed.

the problem:
after it was fixed, it seems that all my programs got erased and my operating system (windows XP) was gone too. the laptop was off the whole 3 months...what could have happened?


1) is it possible for me to install windows XP on my laptop without the cd-rom because the cd-rom (my xp os cd-rom got lost)? because i have the sticker indicating the product key of the original XP os that i had running...

2)do the recovery discs of the Compaq Presario v3000 include the operating system and drives needed to operate my laptop again?

3) how do i use these recovery discs i have with me? what do i do?

4)QUESTION RELATED TO #2: if the recovery disc includes my operating system and drives, can i reformat laptop using this? if yes, is it hard to reformat?

when the laptop was new, there is no CD (question #1). If you did not, then you can order them from HP, see here:

Question #2 - yes
Question #3 - what recovery disks do you have? The ones from HP?
Question #4 - yes you should be given the choice to reformat before the install starts, but if not, you can reformat anyway.

Use The Recovery Discs To Format And Reinstall Everything..

If you have the original Recovery Discs that came with the HP computer, or the original Recovery Discs that you created by using the built-in HP utility, you simply place the first disc in the DVD/CD drive, then restart the computer.. As long as the BIOS is set up to boot from the DVD/CD drive first, you'll be given the option to do a "repair recovery" (non-destructive which repairs the operating system and some pre-installed programs but doesn't "usually" damage your personal documents of files) or a full format recovery (destructive, wipes the drive, formats the drive and reinstalls everything back to its original factory state.)

It's not a difficult process to perform as long as the discs work as designed.

i was already able to return the factory settings of my laptop using the recovery discs! i thought it was going to be complicated and all but it wasnt, just as you said it wouldn't be. so as of today, its as good as new! thanks!
