how to transfer files from one computer to another??

how can i connect two computers together and transfer files from one computer to another???

i'm new to this i was thinking i could maybe use an Ethernet cable and connect the two, but how would i see the other computers files through that. maybe a male to male usb wire, that i would connect to both of them and maybe they'll recognize each other, or maybe some how do it wirelessly using an adhoc connection of some sort.

On the other hand, if you want to make the connection permanent for frequent sharing of files, purchase a router, connect both computers to the router, then set up a home network.
