Gateway Laptop shuts down by itself after it gets hot.

My Gateway 3560 Laptop seems to get hot and shuts off. The fan is running. Does it need a new fan? It is not going into hibernation. It takes at least 5 hours for it to do this. If I need a new fan can I change it myself?

Tell me how long since you cleaned it's vents, heatsinks and fans?

Many were never told it's a yearly thing we must do.

After you clean it up, how about a nice laptop cooling pad?

fans for laptops

I am running a huge Fujitsu laptop (actually a desktop replacement) that runs very hot. I finally picked up the Belkin fan that comes in a small plastic stand and uses a USB port for power. I have not had any trouble with it running too hot since that time. The Belkin is cheap, less than $10 as I recall, and worth every penny. Keeps me cooler, too, when I am using it on my lap.

Also, do try to keep the airways clean. Mine seems to suck stuff up like a little vacuum, and I am always shocked to see all the dirt, animal hair and dust in there.

I see many with this same laptop having same problem. I have had it happen since I got the computer. I sent it in once for a different problem and cost over $20. in shipping. I mentioned this at that time but it was not taken care of. I have a cooling pad it sits on when I am using it and I have blown canned air to clean dust. It has gotten so bad now it will not stay on more than half hour. There is no virus - just heats even though fan blows. I read reports its an ongoing problem for this model.. This is my 3rd gateway but think last now. I call and no one can speak so I understand them.

And do you do your own repairs? If so, it is time to disassemble to remove the heatsink and apply fresh compound. Here's a link about what you might see -> http://www.fonerbooks.com/laptop19.htm

Along the way you will be cleaning all dust and lint out and when the heatsinks are put back down you will be able to check that they are on proper.
