Computer help forum: Compaq f700 Won't Turn On

Well i got a quote from a company that repairs the dc jack for $79 but they are in Virginia & i would have to ship the laptop to them from west coast so pass up on that.
The Geeksquad from bestbuy charges a mandatory diagnostic fee of $69 before they do any work then about $250 for the parts/labor for this repair so were looking at a minimum of $320. You can buy a dc jack for $5 on ebay..Geeksquad is also notorious for accidentally soldering the motherboard when they are working soldering the dc jack so they screw alot of customers computers so i will pass up on them.. The cheapest laptop on sale at bestbuy is a Compaq(GO FIGURE) for $329 with a 15 inch screen so we are better getting that then repairing the ole 2 yr laptop for the same price..The whole press the dvd button to startup the laptop shennanigan is not working for me..I tried to test my ac adapter with a volt meter but the test pin does not fit inside the head of the tip so just another reason why this company sucks..
I'm going to order a new ac adapter from walmart for $60 & if that does not spark it up i will get the refund & put the computer in the closet for good.

I plugged in the new ac adapter i got in the mail today & the compaq immediately lighted up blue around the rim of the dc port & started to charge. I powered it on & it works good as new! I guess i can take back everything bad i said about compaq being that it was just my fault for not ever thinking it could something as minor as an ac adapter issue.
The cheapest place to buy an authentic HP adapter is at walmart online for 65$. I highly recommend you guys get one because you have nothing to lose. Walmart will refund your adapter + the shipping costs if you return it so give it a whirl. There are tons of cheap adapters on amazon & ebay but reading those reviews they fry out after 2 weeks.
Hopefully this one will last atleast 1 yr. The original one lasted 2 yrs. I remember last summer i use to push the power button 50 times before it would power on & i always thought it was the dc jack or motherboard issue. I was draining my battery because the ac adapter shorted so once the battery lost power i thought it was serious. Then i just put it away for 10 months thinking it was some expensive repair & all it needed was a new ac adapter..If anything came out of this experience i got myself a really cool desktop with a 20 inch monitor after i gave up on the ole Compaq but as it turns out its still a working product. Buy the ac adapter & good luck to you all!

Thanks again for the post. As I mentioned I am able to boot my laptop with the DVD rom open close. I was curious if you've found a permanent fix to this problem. I'd really appreciate if you can post any updates. thanks.

does it do the same thing without the battery in it?

Remove the battery and do not open the laptop for a week or two.. then try to boot your laptop. If it boots successfully try this steps!!

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click and select properties
3. Click Device Manager
4. Click Network Adaptors
5. Select Isatap Driver(if it shows yellow sign)then..
6. Right click and disable.

Restart your laptop, and see if works.. It worked for me, i finally fix my compaq f700 and now its good as new..

I finally gave up trying to fix the problem. I removed the CMOS battery and the battery pack for good. when I want to use the computer, I plug in the power adapter and press the power button-boots right up. When I'm done, I shut down as normal and remove the power adapter. Plug it in when I want to use it and all is good. If I ever accedently leave the power adapter plugged in I just unplug it for 5-10 minutes and plug it in before powering up. Wish I would have come across this sooner before I wasted alot of time

First things first.

There is a MBD recall for this laptop for the wireless and motherboard problems that cause the wireless to not work.

Second, if this workaround works, use it as a bandaid and start savig up for a less fail laptop.

Compaq Toshiba and HP made laptops with garbage materials for cheap retailers and the problems are as a result of cheap parts and poor cooling with very little compatability testing.

When I first recieved this laptop I even had IRQ conflicts from the factory.

TRY THIS
on boot flood computer with the 'esc' key by tapping it over and over and over for about 15 sec.

this will cause the computer to stay on and not reset itself.

Let it run about 2 min and then force a hard shutdown by holding the power key until the craptop shuts down.

restart it and it will do a checkdisk on boot.

let this run and when it finishes running it will either take you to windows or shut itself down again, if the latter occurs, repeat the above steps.

Once it starts working again (you get to the desktop)

cont shut it off again AND go get a night job to buy a less fail craptop.

1.check the power is on or off.
2.check its inside ,the memory and the fan,clean them.
3.remembering some soft installed before its down?
try to go into the safe mode to apply a scan with some powerful brand of av,like my way would be the kis2009 and the Spyware Doctor as the part time,and then fix some erros or changes made by the soft or virus would be found.

Don't won't waste your time fixing it. Just sell the good parts and buy another one. It is just not economically feasible to get it fixed.

On the left front of the laptop is a slider button that turns the wifi on and off. Wiggle that button back and forth, clean it if necessary. Ive got two old compaqs back up and running. I wish I could remember where I read this suggestion, and I hope it helps someone else to get an old compaq running again.
