Computer help forum: Compaq f700 Won't Turn On

Since the problem could be related to softened solder from overheating, I wonder what would happen if the penny is applied without bothering with the heat application and simply letting the pressure of the penny reseat and re-attach the GPU when the unit is on.

In fact, while the penny might be providing heat dissipation, it might also be providing sufficient pressure to make the necessary contact.

If so, then one could skip the heat lamp and cut-outs and all that part. For myself, I would begin by simply trying the penny trick on its own.

Please tell me how to fix this or where to find the tutorials

Are costly here. If you read my other posts you find me write about getting a longer warranty on laptops or "until you feel you can deal with the bill."

Dell may fair no better here. Try this. Shop around for laptops with 2 year warranties or add that to your next machine.

thnx for the laptop advice and I'll definitely get a two year warranty next time if I buy new also best to buy from a place that does the service themselves I think. I won't be touching another HP if I can help it. Had nothing but troubles with mine and their customer service sucked for me.
Side note: you can get a refurbished mb for half price on e,b,a,y with a 60 day warranty. I'm going to take mine to another service place next week for a second opinion. I'll post back here if I find out anything.

I am also having this problem. I tried hitting the Esc key and the lights stayed on, but wouldn't boot so i left it on. I was at my desktop and heard the CD drive spin. I looked and still nothing, so i turned it off waited a few secs and turned it back on. It booted. I shut it off again and tried to boot same thing on off on off. So i tried it again and it worked again. Hope this helps someone else. Thanks for the Tip about the Esc key.

After going through Dell's, H-P's, Sony's, Acer, IBM-Lenovo's, and just about every other brand of Laptops in the past 7 years, I have settled on Toshiba. I have 3 Toshiba's, (Wife's, Son's, and myself's) and the 3 plus years We have had them, We have never had any serious problems. I'm sticking with the Toshiba when We upgrade to newer models next year!

I was having this problem and tried the esc thing that kept it on but it didn't show anything on the screen so i left it running on my desk over night and rebooted in the morning. Voila! It loaded Vista. Thanks for the help on that one. Your tip worked!

Nothing in your post narrows it down. Could be as simple as unplugging the AC cord, waiting a minute and plugging it back in to a failed switch, power supply, motherboard or "other."

After the "fix" described above, the laptop booted properly a few times and then the problem returned. If I remove all of the batteries, wait 5 minutes, apply only external power, I can usually get the laptop to boot and the NVIDIA screen will operate properly, although occasionally the laptop screen will be black and I have to use an external display. When the laptop does boot properly, everything works properly until I shut the laptop down. It then enters the constant rebooting cycle until I remove all power and batteries for 5 minutes or so. I suspect that on a restart the BIOS POST is seeing some "fault" that it does not see on a "very" cold boot, but I have been unable to obtain any information about the BIOS POST procedure, so I am only guessing. The "fault" that may be sensed might be the NVIDIA chip, but when the "very" cold boot is successful, the NVIDIA chip seems to work properly. So perhaps there is some other component that the BIOS thinks is faulty, but which is only detected on a reboot. If any one can point me towards detailed POST information on the Phoenix BIOS Version F.08, I would certainly appreciate it.

For F763NR, the CMOS battery is in the same compartment as the RAM and accessible by removing same cover. I've been unable to obtain any further information regarding the BIOS POST. However, I did remove the motherboard and heated the GPU (see youtube posts on procedure). I no longer have the constant rebooting and, at least half of the time the video screen displays properly. Other times the laptop boots properly, but the video screen remains blank. However, it all instances, the external video operates properly. So, some progress, but not yet reliable use of laptop video display.

This worked for me. Was able to do a Restart and that went ok.
Power off/ on - had to hit ESC key again so this is not a permanent fix, Right?

Hi, I have the same problem with presario f700. He is old about 2 years. Esc doesn't working, and I went to the repairman, and he told me that the problem is graphics card. The fixing cost over 200 euro I don't know what to do. Should I take the risk and repair it? What if someother chip on motherboard stop working?

Firstly, I do not know what causes the laptop to not start but I have found a way to start it up almost every time.

I recently purchased one of these dreadful machines on ebay and was disappointed when I had the problem described by everyone here. My F730 would not boot up. The escape button did nothing. The F buttons did nothing. I saw the lights start up in front but died within four seconds. Then I found the answer to my problem, the same as everyone else here.

When you hit the power button, open and close the Dvd/cd rom quickly. I have to stress very quickly or your odds for success will diminish. I have found that it forces the machine to start up and keeps the power going.

I even wiped out my hard drive and reinstalled the operating system (VISTA). The real problem started here as it keeps looping when it hits the HP total care program. BIG MISTAKE FOR ME. When I put in a regular vista, no issues.

So in short, to start and keep your laptop running, open and close the dvd rom. Press the open and close button as soon as you hit the power button. It might not do it the very first time but keep at it and with the proper timing, you system will have life again. If it fails and recycles again, turn off the machine and wait a few seconds and start the process all over again. When it does recycle, you missed it. It is frustrating, but when it does work, it is wonderful, believe me.

I would like to get a more permanent solution for this problem, but in the mean time, this method actually works for my machine. I am very sure it will work on your machine.

Those symptoms appear to be a power supply failure.

Well i bought this compaq 730 laptop back in summer of 2007 for $400 bucks at staples & by summer 2009 it started giving me issues turning on. The battery & charger work but it would not power on so i gave up on it thinking it was a motherboard issue & put it away.Got myself a great deal on an HP desktop with a 20 inch screen at walmart on black friday.I did not touch the 730 for 10 months but out of curiosity today it actually charged for an hour with the orange light turning on i powered it on & it worked for a good hour. Then i moved the computer only 2 feet away from a chair to my desk and the power cord stopped charging the battery. The battery ran out 30 min. later & it shut down. This leads me to rule out it being a motherboard issue & can say this is a power jack issue.
