Can ethernet card replace a modem for dial up?

I was just online with a Dell tech asking if a certain Inspiron 15 model had a modem available. (I am shopping for a new laptop). There are some places that I travel where the only way I can get on line is by dial up so I do need that capability.
He told me that you don't need a modem anymore if there is an ethernet card in the computer. I've never heard of this and am skeptical. Can someone set me straight? Thanks!

I think the tech. mis-understood you. I never heard of such thing either.

Most laptops come with built in modems and Ethernet connectors. Again, the tech doesn't know what he's talking about. Two different technologies involved here.

External modem

You can use an external USB modem or (if you can find one online) a PCMCIA slot card modem. So, all is not lost ! Good luck!!

I havent check the peripherals available ...

for the "Inspiron 15 model" but many manufacturer's do not offer modems with all models of their computers and as far as the tech saying that "you don't need a modem anymore if there is an ethernet card in the computer" I believe something was lost in the communication and either he didn't fully understand what you said to him or you didn't fully grasp what he said to you.

If a modem is not offered all is not lost as you can easily add either a USB external modem or even better with a laptop you can add a PC Card modem yourself and Gateway probably also has these available (as do Newegg.com or tigerdirect.com or many other places).

I explained my need to the tech very clearly and when he first answered I repeated - there is no broadband available where I'm going and I need to use dial up to get on line. Don't I need a modem?
That was his answer.

In the meantime thank you all who suggested the USB modem - that will work just fine!
I ended up buying a Toshiba Satellite E105-S1402 and will need to add the USB modem - otherwise it will be perfect for travel.

It's like using a fridge to make coffee, or a coffee maker to keep you chicken frozen. Won't work.
Buy the hardware you need to do what you want to do.
