Printer. HP compatible with Dell?

I have a Dell computer Inspiron 530. The printer is a Photo 926. The printer is defective in that the black ink cartridge will not snap in and seat properly. When I try to print, I get the message: "Left ink cartridge not supported." I have tried repeatedly to press it down and get it to firmly snap in, to no avail. Frustrating! As a last resort, I banged the cartridge with a hammer.
I have the printer from my last computer. It is a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 882C. Would it be compatible with the Dell computer (Inspiron 530) which I have now? Could I hook up (plug in) the old HP printer to the Dell computer which I now have?
I'm not going to buy another Dell cartridge or another Dell printer. It's just not worth the trial and error. I'll either do without a printer or buy a new HP computer and printer.
So whadda ya think? Can I hook up my old HP printer to the Dell computer? Will appreciate responses. If you guys say my HP printer is not compatible with my Dell computer, I will promptly take the Dell printer outdoors to my concrete slab patio; throw it as high into the air as I can ... and watch it smash-land! GRRRRRRR!
