Computer freezes during startup

Hi,

I believe I have a mobo issue, but I'm not sure. My computer will start up, beep it's standard beep but in the first boot screen, it will get stuck at the point when it is recognizing the processor. I have an Intel Quad Core processor, but it only shows 1 CPU, whereas it used to count up to 4 CPU before continuing to Windows. I reset the CMOS but all that did was get me to the mobo initial screen at which point it asks me to hit delete or tab to proceed into a menu, neither of which works.

The other thing I thought of is that I'm using a wireless laser keyboard. Could it be that the computer will only register key strokes from a wired keyboard?

Any help is appreciated.

Operating System Installed Yet?

It appears as though you've got an operating system installed but you didn't tell us which one..?

At this point, it also seems like you need to update the chipset/motherboard driver for your machine and/or the BIOS.. If it's Intel, the chipset driver should be fairly easy to find and install.. And if it's not detecting the various CPU cores, it could also need the BIOS upgrade.

After the above steps are done, the computer should recognize any type of correctly installed keyboard..

Computer worked fine until a couple of days ago...

when all of a sudden it would only recognize 1 CPU on startup instead of 4. I included the keyboard comment because the computer wouldn't let me enter the BIOS and I'm wondering if that is just because it's not reading the keystrokes due to it being a wireless keyboard. I can't update anything until I can get into the BIOS. Again, the computer was fine until a couple of days ago when I tried turning it on. My OS is Win XP SP2.

So You've Moved On To Try A Different Keyboard?

If there's a PS2 port, swap in a known good PS2 keyboard which will be better recognized for the BIOS work.

USB Wireless Keyboard

Yes if the wireless reciever is plugged in via usb sometimes the computer will not read the keystrokes when booting up.

Managed to get to Windows

Thanks for everyone's suggestions/help. Turns out 2gb of ram was bad. When I moved to a new slot, I figured it out, removed the bad ram and the computer booted fine. Thanks again
