Computer will not recognize cd & dvd drives.

I started my computer and all of a sudden it will not recognize my cd & dvd drives. It was working fine the last time I used it. I have a pc with windows xp. Any suggestions. Thanks

Check for UPPERFILTERS and LOWERFILTERS in the registry: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 and correct it if necessary.

If that doesn't work: do a system restore back to when it still worked.

If that doesn't work either: try if you can still boot from a bootable CD. If that works, it's a Windows problem. If that doesn't work either it's a hardware problem. Looking at those drives in the BIOS is good intermediate step.

Please post your findings.

i had this problem on my laptop which is running vista,it started after an update to itunes,apparently it was some sort of driver/software conflict,itunes is useing a driver from gear inc and it put a registry value on my pc as follows 4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318,so the only way i could get rid of it was to uninstall itunes and delete the registry through regedit and as i could live without itunes i did not reistall it or i would be back to square 1,now my cd/dvd drive is ok.

I had the same problem when I installed Itunes and deleted it.
