Uninsatlling Norton AntiVirus

Hi. A small buisness I know has a computer with Windows Vista Home Basic on it. It came with Norton on it. I has since expired and they installed AVG free edition. They tried to uninstall Norton from the control panel, thought it was uninstalled, since it no longer shows up in the control panel. Rebooted and these messages came up, Symantec User Session, A necessary file could not be loaded: npctray. A necessary file could not be loaded: Session Helper. And another Symantec Email Proxy A necessary componet for this function is missing or damaged, then it gives the location on the C drive (c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AntiVirus\AvMail.dll. They have not yet uninstalled the LiveUpdate 3.2 or LiveUpdate Notice. How can they get rid of these messages?

On the Norton website

On the Norton website you will be able to find special uninstall tools for Norton products. This is necessary on account of the steaming pile Norton products have become since Symantec took over.

Also, AVG Free is not licensed for use on even non-profit or educational systems, let alone ones used as part of some commercial enterprise. It is STRICTLY licensed for personal home use ONLY. Everyone else is expected to pony up for a full on license. So if they don't want to pay for AVG, if you look around you can usually find free after rebate deals on Kaspersky and NOD32 AV programs. Even without the rebates, they only run about $25-$30US on places like Amazon, so it's not a big risk if the rebate fails to come through.

Proper Uninstall of Norton

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

To properly remove all Norton software from the machine you will need to use the Norton Removal Tool. Please carefully follow the steps below.

1. Click on the link below, and carefully follow the instructions to use the Norton Removal tool:

2. After the tool has run and removed all Norton products, restart your computer. Log into Windows and run the tool again. Restart your computer after it finishes running a second time.
