Computer help forum: laptop make ticking noise

...then such sounds can frequently mean the hard drive is headed south.. Unfortunately, you didn't give us any specifics on the sound or the laptop.. Age of the computer? Operating system? Exactly where the "ticking" is coming from? Things like that. Be sure to make backups of your important files NOW. You have options depending where the sound is coming from.. Going back to the hard drive, IF that is the culprit, you may want to replace it now while it's still functioning or wait until it fails.. Your choice..

On the other hand, if the "ticking" is coming from the speakers, then try updating the sound drivers....or...you might want to scan for spyware.. Have you done such?

...then it could be a number of things, including a fan rubbing up against a portion of the case.. It could also still be the hard drive.. So...if you are knowledgeable in the repair of laptop computers, try taking it apart and verifying clearances of all fans, reseating all hardware, etc..

If you aren't well versed on laptop repair, you should probably take it to a shop.
