Computer help forum: Icons suddenly missing from shortcuts

In addition, the standard Vista "Disk Cleanup" can also cause issues if you select the wrong things for it to remove.. Read some of the issues and fixes discussed in the thread below from the Vista forum:

But if you used the Windows Disk Cleanup Utility and removed all the listed items, then that could certainly have caused your problems.. The Cleanup Utility is only to be used to remove specific programs, not everything there. If such occurred, you may need to reinstall all of your programs to make them function correctly.

Refresh your icons by right clicking an empty space on your desktop. Choose 'personalize', then click on 'display settings'. Now, change 32 bit colors to 16. Click apply and okay. Now change 16 bit colors back to 32 bit, apply and okay your way out.

The generic icons should be reset back to the associated web page icons you have chosen.

This has worked for me when my shortcut icons have either disappeared or reverted to generic. Give it a try.
