If that is the case, any large program download can take some time. You might want to download and install a download manager like: FlashGet: http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashget/

Maybe try an online scan instead of trying to download the entire AVG program. Point being, AVG will no longer support ME in a couple of months. If you want to try to download an anti-virus program try Avast since it will support ME. Regarding on line scans, maybe try one of the following, I dont remember which still support ME, but you will find out soon enough:

Get rid of anything they find. In addition, maybe have a look at all the programs you have installed in: start/control panel/add and remove programs. Get rid of anything suspicious or just stuff you no longer need.
