Acer 5520 CD/DVD drive "gone".

When the computer starts in normal mode the CD drive wont show in either "My Computer" or the "Device Manager", Hell, the option wont even show in the DM.

If I start it in safe mode it shows up, works, does what it needs to.

I've shut off a few non-essential programs and crap, tweaked a few settings, nothing seems to work.

It's a near-brand-new laptop with Windows Home Prem. The drive is a Optiarc by Sony NEC or whatever, if that matters much.

Tried nearly everything I can think of. Restored the computer, done all the basic stuff.

Any ideas?

Having same issue

I'm having the same problem after having the Acer 5520 computer for over a year. My system is Vista Home. I'm worried because I have no way to get my many pictures off this thing, and buying external drives is not an option for me.

Did you ever figure out how to fix this issue?
I would appreciate any help you have.

Low on funds, and limited on shopping options, but where at?
Would using the DVD in safe mode be an option for backing up my pics & music?

Office Max. Just keep shopping.

It seems to me that blank media costs too. If the above didn't revive the drive, I doubt safe mode will do any better. At least you could try it?
