Set the jumpers on the new DVD to match the old CD drive?

Re. Motherboard. I have not seen any maker's name or any other indication on the M/B to give me any clues of its Manufacturer, although this quest has lost its importance.

When I switch the computer on it gives one bleep; as it did, when in its healthy state. Then it goes into a routine of giving out all the data, which it did, when it was working and was switched off without going through proper shutting down procedure.

It goes on to show :
System configuration details.
CUp Type: AMD - K6 -2
Base Memory: 640K
Etc.
Going into verifying DMI Pool Data...
and then shows:
DISK BOOT FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

I have not got the XP disk which was loaded on this computer. I have xp operating system disk of my other Computer, which was bought later, though I do not use xp (home) on the second PC anymore because I have updated it to the Professional XP.

So the question now is: How do I get the said computer to work?
Do I buy a new xp disk or use my disk which I have? Once using the new disk (if required) how I load it on the hard drive as it permits no access to it?

I tried the disk I have, and ended up with a black screen with a cursor blinking on the top left hand corner.
Will be grateful for any helpful suggestions.

Run PC Wizard. This will give you the name of the mother board. This will allow you to go to the manufactures web site for further information. This software may not give you the model number. You will need to open the tower and look at the board. The model number is usually the largest number on the board and quit often located near the PCI/PCIe slots. If there is no number then there should be a paper self adhesive sticker on the board somewhere with this information. Once we get this far you can work directly with the manufacturer.

I would suggest you might wish to follow the our directions if you wish to resolve this issue. You have to trust someone if you want the problem to be solved. Your way hasn't worked, try ours.

This software will also identify the DVD drive.

This is good software and very helpful in many ways.

There is no reference made to Linux/other OSs that I have seen on the site. I do not run Linux OSs. I'm sure you'll need lots of luck to solve this if you have Linux installed.

I have checked all what has been suggested although I am stuck where I was.

Yes I only wanted to install a dvd writer and did all routine. i.e. opened the case, took the cd writer out (I had another cd read only device as well running as slave which I removed)and placed dvd writer in place with master jumper in situation. I have not checked the health of the old cables though !
However, in addition I removed my floppy disk cable.It is another ide (black) 40 pin socket on the Motherboard by the side of the two regular(blue) IDE connections.
As I did not want floppy dick or the cd read only devices on the computer.

My hard drive is connected to one IDE(blue end of cable to blue connection on the board) and I put the same cd write drive back to resolve the issue. It goes as far as system confirmation and gives me the boot failure message, and invites me to insert the system dick to move forward.
It does not show any hard drive in the Bios. It shows:
'Primary Master disk: CD Rom, Mode 4'
Other three places, Pri. slave and secondary slave and master are indicated 'None'.
I have tried to download 'pc wizard 2008' and 'iolo.com sm/7' (using another computer)and with a view to save them on a cd to load them on the stricken computer, but have failed in saving the programs on a cd.
I reckon it to be a pathetic state of affairs.

I would be very happy to follow any suggestions that help me learn to put the situation right.

that FIRST, you have the CD-ROM as master on the PRIMARY IDE and the hard drive on the SECONDARY IDE (should be the other way around).
Since the CD is being detected as master on the primary IDE disconnect the ribbon cable from it and connect it to the hard drive. Connect the cable currently on the hard drive to the CD.

RE-boot and what do you have?

You have hopefully disabled the floppy in the BIOS sunce you removed it (and by the way, the floppy ribbon cable is NOT " another ide (black) 40 pin socket").

In the BIOS you should have set your hard drive to AUTO to be detected (your motherboard's manual would guide you through the BIOS settings)

might be best to get that back and find some way to delete the data or destroy the HDD.
