AVG is a good antivirus program, but it's not enough and it doesn't get all the baddies out there. He should also have an anti-spyware program and a firewall. There are many free and decent ones available at Download.com.

Pop-unders are the same as popups, but instead of popping up on top of whatever you are doing, they pop under whatever you currently have on the screen. They are more annoying than popups because you don't always notice them at first. Avant Browser has built-in popup and ad blockers.

Regarding your friend being a pastor and seeing porn. Not to sound insensitive, but even pastors should be aware of what kind of things can show up online or on the computer. Probably the only way to probably filter anything like porn or whatever from showing up would be to install a child-safe type program on the computer. I don't know anything about them, but they are worth looking into.

We need to eject the pests first. Those may be locking you out.

If you are using AVG to scan and find any infected files, they should be deleted instead of just cleaned. If those infected files came with or belong to a program that no longer works, it's best to just get rid of that program too.

Did you download and install anti-spyware or firewall yet? A firewall will secure your computer and anti-spyware will find files on your computer that antivirus programs don't scan for. At least get anti-spyware first and get rid of any junk it finds and then you can concentrate on getting your control panel back. Like Bob said, getting rid of these files will probably give you back access to Control Panel.
