How to share a USB external hard drive on a home network

I have a home network connected to a Dlink router, all PC running XP SP2. I have no problem sharing printer, internal hard drive/folder and Firewire external hard drive, but for some reason, I cannot share my USB external hard drive.

I mean, I can set the 'Share' setting on the folder to share, but none of my networked computer can access the files. They do see the shared folder but when I clicked on it, it comes back with an error message "\\pc1\folder is not accessible, you may not have permission ...."

I am pretty sure it is some setting/configuration I am not setting properly, any help would be appeciated

Works With Window 7 As Well

Just ran into this problem with windows 7... have had it for years!!! was just dealing with it... certain computers weren't able to access certain drives... i have multiple.. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS YOU HAVE NO IDEA!!!!

With windows 7 i had to use Step 4 so be aware that this will probably need to be done... this is not a fake... this will not harm your computer as i have done it and mine is working fine!! if you have this problem then please use this solution~~
