5100 Dell Inspiron w/ WinXP home edition, service pack 2
2.4 Ghz Pentium 4 processor
Mobility Radeon 7500C (driver is up-to-date)
Recently, I accidentally fed some soup to my network slot on my PC, frying the motherboard. A new (but used) motherboard, reformat (the HD was ok, but it needed a reformat), etc and my computer was running like a dream for a week and a half. However, one day I woke up to find my monitor completely black, but the computer was still running (I could hear my instant messenger noises). I restarted my computer and the splash screen showed up, but afterwards it went black. I could hear the program start-up noises in the background. One more restart, same problem and so I closed the computer (putting it in hibernate) and then reopened it to have a functioning screen again. This trick worked for a few days, but the problem came back. I was able to run my comp in safe mode and restored my computer back to the time it was working. For the last week and a half, I have been alternating with safe mode and normal mode as my screen allows me. However, yesterday the screen got really dark in safe mode, telling me the problem can still affect it there. I have looked at my power settings, run anti-virus software, restored my comp and briefly ran diagnostics to test the inverter in my monitor. I think its a software issue, but I have had the computer for 3.5yrs. My fan is running fine and with the new motherboard, the fan got some fresh thermal compound. Any ideas? Could the motherboard I replaced be bad? I never reinstalled the drivers and utilities from Dell on my computer after the reformat.. issues there? Thanks so much for any help!
