ipod suddenly stopped showing up in itunes or my computer

i have a hp pavilion xt 983. im running windows xp. my ipod is a 30gb video. recently i plugged my ipod into the same usb port that i always do and i didnt show up in my computer as a disk, or on itunes. i try my other ports and nothing still. the funny thing about this is that it charges still. ive tryed other devices such as a camera and they charge to but wont show up either as a device. ive try techinal support with hp but they were no help because all they wanted was a couple hundred dollars per phone call, and apple couldnt figure it out either. so this is pretty much my last resort. hopefully u can help. if you need any other system information just ask.

a. install the motherboard chipset drivers. I don't think "it worked before" since I need to try that.

b. I install a new PCI USB 2.0 card and see if that works.

Which chipset driver would I use?
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph06794&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=62773&lang=en tells me it's a VIA KL 133 chipset so I'd use this one.
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070 lists the Version 5.11A of the Hyperion Pro drivers.

Power down your computer. Remove all peripherals attached to the USB connectors of your computer. Unplug your computer completely from the wall socket. Leave it unplugged overnight. Reattach the computer plug the next morning. Reboot your computer. Attach each USB peripheral one at a time. Now, attach your Ipod to the the USB connector, and see if your computer recognizes it. Let us know if it works. Good luck!
