Graphics Program Help: Mac OSX 10.4

In August, I got a new computer... iMac. The processor is a 2 GHz Intel Core DUo. Memory is 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. On my old computer, I'd make graphics on a free downloadable program called GIMP (http://www.gimp.org). GIMP needs X11 to run on a mac. I downloaded both X11 and GIMP to my new imac and tried to run it. X11 opened and GIMP opened for a few seconds. The window didn't have time to launch before it closed down. X11 remained open.

Yesterday, after being quite fed up, I downloaded a brogram called InkScape (http://www.inkscape.org). However, when I tried to run it, the same problem happened: X11 opened, the InkScape icon appeared in my toolbox, but before the program could open, the InkScape icon disappeared and only X11 was left open.

My computer is running OSX 10.4.8 and my old computer (OSX) didn't have this problem. Can anybody help me?

I did some looking, and it seems that the Mac documentation is pretty lacking, however there does seem to be some hope if you don't mind a little work.

The only reason The GIMP requires the X11 addon for OS X is because the toolkit used to make The GIMP (GTK) needs it. However, there are some ports of GTK to OS X's Cocoa, which removes the need for X11.

Right now, it looks like you have to compile GTK and it's support libs yourself. I'm not sure if you can still use Gimp.app or whatever it was you downloaded, or if you'll have to custom compile The GIMP yourself. I found this site which talks about the native OS X port of GTK, and has a link on how to build it. It's not hard to find similar instructions for The GIMP. With some more looking, you might be able to find someone who's already done it for you and packaged it all up.

There's also a sort of offshoot of The GIMP on OS X called Seashore. It looks like it is probably pretty early in development, and some people claim it doesn't have the same feature set as The GIMP proper, but if your needs are fairly basic, it might be worth looking into.

Finally, if you could try executing Gimp.app from a Terminal.app session, there might be some error output that would be useful in figuring out what's going on. No guarantees that it can be fixed, since the X11 layer really complicates things.

And Seashore works as it should, so you're officially the coolest person I've met on these boards! (^^; ) I'll still try looking into my GIMP/InkWell problem. Thanks again!
