Computer help forum: Remove unnecessary/duplicate files and free hard disk space?

Please follow the steps below. It will help you clean out the junk stuff on the computer. On Windows XP, it's best to NOT remove the .chk files indicated in the link, but it's not that important either way.

After following all the procedures above, run Error Checking/Chkdsk and Defrag to optimize the hard drive:

Delete all the other .tmp files listed. When you do a search, simply select all of them, then find the problem file, hold down the "Ctrl" key and click on it once to deselect it. You should then be able to delete all the others.

I recall using a product that showed dupe files.

I gave me a nice list and then left it to me to figure out which files were needed and which were not needed.

After looking at that list for a while I said 'nuts' how do I know which files are needed.

If your going to play in that area I hope you have some good backups.

You haven't told us where they are or what they're named.. There are a number of tools that identify "identical files" but as mentioned by Bob, they don't tell you whether they are truly needed or not. I tend to leave those duplicate file lists alone. Unfortunately, 11 GB is a lot of files space.. Most tools identify them by size and name.. Backup files are frequently placed in all sorts of places and some are safe to delete while others aren't.

150 MB of space??.. Generally, simply using the "Disk Cleanup" section and removing all but the most recent Restore Point will get rid of GB's of System Restore space.
