Computer help forum: Disk Cleanup not Responding

Have you tried running a few of the clean up options manually first??.

Start by cleaning out the "Temporary Internet Files" folder, then do a search for "*.tmp" (without the quotes) and delete all of the .tmp files on the computer. Next, open "My Computer", then RIGHT click on the C drive, choose 'Properties'. When that loads, click on the "Tools" tab, and choose to run the "Error Checking" option. When the little box loads, place a CHECK in BOTH boxes, then click OK. When the computer tells you that you must restart the computer to run that option, choose OK and restart the computer. Upon reboot the Error Checking program will automatically run. AFter it's finished, (it takes a little while to accomplish it's task), then follow the same path to the "Tools" tab and run Disk Defragmenter.

The compression tests take forever and people think it's locked up. It can take minutes to days to complete. You'll find fixes in the former discussions.

The response to download from kellys-korner is not the actual answer.
What happens here is that when U compress files you gain disk space & compressing file can give you around 75 - 125 MB or more disk space & by deleting it from the resgitry is not the solution

what kellys-korner does is that it deletes the compress old files from the registry.

hi i'm runing a windows xp dell 2400 dimension 256 ram with pentium 4.

i'm not an expert in pc. and i was trying to run disk cleanup..how ever it seens never to complete stays on..scaning compressed files for the longest..and..i've left it overnight and it does not advance at all. can anyone please help me. the last time it work..was in 6/3/2004 .

if u have a slow PC (files take time to open) do the followng...

start>Accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter (open disk defragmenter)... select any volume & click defragment.

what happens...
when u open any file while closing it is save in different parts of an HDD and hence while opening the file windows searches for its parts.

defragmenting brings all the parts close enough that file opens faster.
