It's not only about capacity

winzip really only great for docs and/or pics. Yeah, MP3s are alr compressed as is. Using winZip on a 12.6MB mp3 will lower the size by as low as 11.4MB. Not too big of a diff. I u really wanna cut back, and not concerned about some extra time and some lossy-ness, try converting BMP/PNG to GIF/JPG, WAV to MP3/OGG/WMA, and MPG to AVI/WMV. That'll do much more straight up.
Back when my group distributed our product manual for a software engineering course, winZip was useful here. An 86 page document filled with images at 12.8MB got compressed down to 878KB. Now that's something!
.
As for the hd/microdrive, they didn't have 300GB ext HDs back then. Cost effective compared to flashdrives. A 2GB flashdrive costs about $110.
Most importantly, it's for convenience. When I go to the school's PC lab or my office PC, i'd much prefer to carry around a small 4GB micro drive that fits in my pocket than a 300GB ext HD the size of dozen box of donuts. I'd have to use up half of my backpack space just for a 300GB ext HD. For these trips, at the very least, I'm transferring very small text/Office docs. At the most, I've got lots of MP3s, software install packages, large pictures pictures. Unless u get ''shock rated'' ext HDs, the ext HD will likely sustain damage if you drop it from 3.5ft high. While the microdrive is also fragile, I'm gonna bet that it's not as fragile as that.
If i go home out of state and grab some stuff off my old PC, i wiill use my ext hd. I won't lug such a big item just for 80MB to 3GB of data. Furthermore, altho networking isn't a wildly impractical idea, my parents stopped internet service to save $47/mo, so that's not an option
This is the same reason why ppl buy a high end laptop when a similar specced desktop could be had for $1000 less. Ppl need to take notes on a PC while at work, law school, plane, train, bus, etc. which is NOT something you can do while carrying around a desktop.
Same as why ppl use a PDA instead of a laptop, when the laptop has a bigger screen, higher specs, runs an OS that has a great selection of gmaes and productivity apps. PDA is convenient for simplier tasks like checking phone numbers, email, minor editting of Office docs. Leave laptops for writing proposals, designing your webpage, etc.
