Need help installing a Daisy Wheel Printer ...

I am trying to get the owner of the small company I work for to come out of the dark ages and start using the small in-house computer network we have for something other than accounting work. We currently use electric typewriters(would you believe it!) to type some of the forms that are required by our local authorities. My owner will only start to use a software package I have found it if I can get the electric typewriters to work with it. We have IBM Wheelwriter 1000's that do have a connection port already installed (36 pin amphenol). Since this model is no longer supported by IBM or Lexmark (the manufacturers), I can't find any information about what kind of cable to use. I have tried to connect using a standard parallel with no luck. I am also have trouble locating anything about setting up forms to print on the typewriter. I am thinking about the typerwriter as a character printer like a daisy wheel printer. Anyone have any ideas? I am getting desperate!!

We don't have an OS to work with either. But if it's the usual 36 pin CENTRONICS connection, that's called a parallel port. Look around for a grey haired PC guru and they'll fill you in about those. Cables are still sold and many PCs have the other 25 pin matching connections called "parallel ports."

From there you boot DOS and tap the PRINT SCREEN to see if you have it working.

Since no OS is noted, that's as far as we can go.

I agree with Robert, it more than likely is a parallel port. However, getting this to work may cause more havoc or at a big hassle. Use a std. LPT printer(parallel), hook it up to the LPT port of a system. Now, under the properties when(hopefully) the system sees a new printer. Check the properties of the printer and make sure its "generic" driver and text only or as plain as possible, under any windoze OS, expect XP(cross-fingers) what does it see. XP too, but it leaves behind alot of older printers for direct driver support. Also, under the bios of the system, verify that the LPT setting(parallel) of port is STD or SPP, nothing else and save upon exit. I suggest if possible to use Win9x and/or DOS for best operation of this type of printer. If you can move away from this all the better and get a basic dot matrix should be more supported. If the boss is generous, try going for a laser using basic Roman 10p output.

You can google for more. I looked and seen a PC Connection but it doesn't say "LPT/parallel port, which allows the point it maybe more of a IBM supported port not 100% LPT, but it s worth the try. Look under IBM or Lexmark for possible tech/legacy articles on the topic.
