Salary. To negotiate or not?

So, I am currently employed with an okay salary, but the salary is okay because it is pretty much a dead end career field with no possibility of promotion. I am looking to move into another career with more growth potential. I have an interview for a new job and the interviewer told me up front that there isn't a lot of negotiation room in the area of Salary. The issue is that the Salary that is his baseline is about 3k a year lower than what I currently make.
I'd really like the job because the work experience will put me in a position to never make below 50k again after I have a few years of experience, but I'd really like to not take a pay cut.
Given the weak economy, is negotiating to try to him least get them to give me what I already make worth the possibility of disqualifying myself for the job?
