considering career change to IT

I'm 27, single and am considering a career change from being a teacher to IT. I wanted to shoot for being a help desk technician and go from there with more certs. I think I'll get into systems and go for my MCSE. As I switch careers I wanted to get some experience but still be able to support myself with a job (preferably) in the field. I know that a lot of people won't even consider you if you don't have any experience. So, how do you get that first set of experience while still supporting yourself?
FYI, I've got some amateur experience. I've built a few gaming rigs from scratch. I know my way around the inside of a computer and operating system. If I don't know something, I can figure it out pretty easily.
